WELCOME TO SPACE EXPLORATION

An Interactive Application of a New Planet

You get to start in our out-of-this-world spaceship, and then pick our New Planet to visit.  After teleporting out of the cockpit into the planet, you can experience interactive and educational aspects of our planet.

WATER WORLD

Go for a boat ride!

We decided to incorporate water into our planet because it creates a unique VR experience for the user.  Who doesn't love the sounds of crashing waves? Now you can experience it without even getting wet.

ECOLOGY

Plant Life

We decided to incorporate fun plant life into our funky planet. Walk right up to a new species and immediately hear all about it through your headset.

SWORD

Cut down some funky plants!

Our sword, which you can pick up using the controller, allows you to wave it around and even use it to cut down some plants

SPACE EXPLORATION

Design Goal and Description

Our goal in designing this application was to create an interactive experience for our user to explore a new planet.  Our theme is very earthy; green and brown, and we have lots of activities for our user to check out such as funky new plants and a boat ride.  We really wanted to give the user an all-around area to explore, and the planet is lined with mountains. The environment allows the user to walk around and see the planet from different vantage points.

Interaction Details

You starts off in a futuristic cockpit of your spaceship, and pick the new planet, Floralia, to go and check out, which can be accessed by walking toward the holographic planet.  Transported instantly, you find yourself on the ground of Floralia, ready for action. Walking or running around, you get to see the water and plantlife that make up our planet. You can pick up the sword and wave it around and you can go up to all of our funky and colorful plants to hear facts all about them, all you have to do is stand close enough! We wanted to create a handsfree world that is easy and fun.  You can even hop on the row boat and take it for a little ride around the pond. If you return to the holographic planet floating where you landed, you will be able to return to your spaceship by simply walking toward it. We hope you enjoyed visiting our planet!

ABOUT US

Who We Are

Since joining as a team after Spring Break, the four of us have levied our skills to contribute broadly to our final project.  Scott, the artsier one of us helped out with scripting, while Victoria, the sailor, implemented a boat into the New Planet.  Dylan worked hard on several of the scripts to make our planet very advanced and Emily oversaw it all, keeping us on track and on schedule.

VICTORIA SLATER

Designer

Victoria Slater is a Junior at Connecticut College double majoring in Computer Science and French.  She is from Greenwich, CT and will be a Tech Sales Intern at IBM this summer.  Victoria looks forward to taking her knowledge of Unity and Processing with her into her future tech career.

DYLAN GRANGER

Scripter and Writer

I primarily worked on various trigger events throughout the world in the project, including scene transitions and object interaction. I wrote and recorded sound bytes for each of our alien objects and wrote scripts to optimize their order of play. I also found background music tracks on Youtube, as well as sound effects from a few different free-use sound database websites. I also helped set up a lot of the VRTK-related components of the project, including some scripting as well as testing of our hardware and software integration throughout the project. In general I was the primary project scripter, making sure to properly bring together all of the visual and creative aspects of our project.

EMILY KLINGEBIEL

VR Coder and Prefab Creation

I managed the VRTK and SteamVR setup and coding, making sure the user could properly see, move, and interact with the virtual world we made. I used both online tutorials and the tutorials within the VRTK asset package to learn about and implement VRTK. I also made all of the prefabs for this project, save for Victoria’s boat prefab she got from the Unity Asset Store. These prefabs were modelled and shaded in Autodesk Maya, and to color them I used either colored Blinn or Lambert materials or textures taken from internet images. I chose to make these prefabs and models myself - namely the full ship cockpit scene, various plants, sword, dock, and hut - so we could properly embody our goals of making a unique and alien world.

SCOTT LEFF

Landscape Architect

I spend most of my time working on this project dealing landscape and terrain. I would build the islands in unity, and shade them appropriately. I made sure that the water prefabs worked and accurately represented our vision of what the role that water would serve in our environment. I worked by using a series of level brushes to create islands, and then I used the smoothe brush to make sure that there were even hills that could be easily traversed by the user.
